KML to GeoJSON Converter

Your KML file is parsed and converted in this browser. It is not uploaded to Kanaries servers.

KML only; KMZ is not supported here. No file size cap is set. Processing depends on available browser memory.

KML conversion with useful data intact

01

Geometry-aware output

KML Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiGeometry, and gx:Track elements become valid GeoJSON geometries.

02

Properties preserved

Placemark names, descriptions, folder paths, and ExtendedData fields are copied into GeoJSON properties.

03

Local browser processing

Parsing and download happen on your device. No account or server upload is required.

What changes when KML becomes GeoJSON?

KML combines geographic data with Google Earth presentation settings. GeoJSON focuses on portable geometry and properties for web maps, GIS tools, and APIs.

Use the result in a web map, GIS workflow, spatial API, or any application that accepts a GeoJSON FeatureCollection.

Placemarks become features
Each supported KML Placemark becomes one GeoJSON Feature with its geometry and properties.
Coordinates stay in KML order
Longitude, latitude, and optional altitude values are written as GeoJSON positions in WGS 84.
Presentation data is omitted
Icons, colors, camera views, overlays, models, and network links do not have a direct portable match and are not exported.

How to convert KML to GeoJSON

  1. 01

    Choose a KML file

Select an uncompressed .kml file. KMZ archives are not accepted on this page.

  2. 02

    Parse the placemarks

The browser reads supported geometry and gathers names, descriptions, folders, and ExtendedData.

  3. 03

    Review the result

Check feature, geometry, coordinate, and property counts, then inspect the JSON preview.

  4. 04

    Download GeoJSON

Save the complete FeatureCollection as a .geojson file.

/ 06

KML to GeoJSON checks

/ 01

Use standard WGS 84 coordinates

KML and GeoJSON both use longitude and latitude, so standard KML coordinates transfer without reprojection.

/ 02

Review unsupported objects

Check the conversion note when the source contains overlays, models, network links, or invalid geometry.

/ 03

Keep the original KML

The GeoJSON output does not retain KML styling or Google Earth scene settings.

KML to GeoJSON FAQ

Q01How do I convert KML to GeoJSON?

Choose a .kml file, review the generated FeatureCollection, and download the .geojson result.

Q02Is my KML file uploaded?

No. The browser reads, converts, previews, and downloads the file locally.

Q03Which KML geometries are supported?

The converter handles Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiGeometry, and gx:Track geometry inside Placemarks.

Q04Are KML attributes preserved?

Names, descriptions, folder paths, and ExtendedData values become GeoJSON properties. KML styles and overlays are not included.

Q05What are the file limits?

This page accepts .kml files and sets no file size cap. Processing depends on the memory available in your browser and device.
