Open KML & KMZ Files Online
View Google Earth files on an interactive map without installing software. Inspect placemarks, routes, polygon boundaries and attributes. Read KML files or choose a KML document inside a KMZ archive, directly in your browser.
KML / KMZ Viewer
KML and KMZ contents are read on your device, without file uploads. The background map requests tiles from OpenStreetMap.
No file size cap. Processing depends on your device’s available memory.
- 01Open .kml and .kmz files without Google Earth.
- 02Inspect points, lines and polygons, including polygon holes.
- 03Search placemark names and attributes; click a feature to inspect it.
- 04Choose between KML documents inside a KMZ archive.
- 05Try the KML or KMZ sample without providing a file.
Inspect the Geography Inside Your File
KML and KMZ in one viewer
Read plain KML or unzip KMZ locally. doc.kml opens first when present; other KML documents can be selected.
Points, routes and areas
Display Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiGeometry and gx:Track coordinates on a 2D map.
Names and attributes
Review descriptions, folder paths and ExtendedData values as plain text.
Search and focus
Search placemark attributes, then select a result to bring its geometry into view.
Local file processing
Your file stays in the browser. Map tiles load separately from OpenStreetMap.
Clear compatibility limits
Invalid geometry is skipped with a warning. Network links, overlays, styles and 3D models are not rendered.
What Are KML and KMZ Files?
KML is an XML format for geographic placemarks, paths and areas. KMZ packages KML and supporting resources in a ZIP archive.
Use this viewer to inspect local geometry and attributes. Use Google Earth for original styles, imagery, terrain, tours or 3D models.
- Google Earth exports
- Preview a shared map file without installing a desktop application.
- Geographic coordinates
- KML stores longitude before latitude. Altitude is retained in the data but is not shown in 3D.
- Archives with several documents
- Choose the internal KML document you want to inspect; network-linked documents are not loaded automatically.
How to View a KML or KMZ File
- 01
Open your file
Select a .kml or .kmz file, drag it into the viewer, or try a sample.
- 02
Choose a document
For a KMZ with several KML entries, choose the document from the menu.
- 03
Explore the map
Pan and zoom, search attributes, or select a placemark to focus on it.
- 04
Inspect the details
Read the selected feature’s properties and expand its geometry and coordinates.
When to Use This Viewer
Check a map attachment
Inspect a KML or KMZ received by email before opening it in GIS software.
Review a field route
Compare a recorded path with named locations and inspect coordinate values.
Verify an area boundary
Check polygon outlines and holes alongside their descriptive attributes.
KML / KMZ Viewer FAQ
Q01How can I open a KML file online?
Select a .kml file in the viewer. Supported local placemarks appear on the map; select one to inspect its attributes.
Q02Can I open KMZ without Google Earth?
Yes. The viewer extracts KML from the KMZ locally. It prefers doc.kml and lets you select other KML entries.
Q03Are my files uploaded?
No. File contents stay on your device. OpenStreetMap receives requests for background map tiles, not your KML or KMZ file.
Q04Which geometry types are supported?
Points, lines, polygons with holes, multi-geometries and gx:Track paths. The map is 2D; altitude remains available in coordinate data.
Q05Does it display everything from Google Earth?
No. Styles, external icons, network links, image overlays, tours and 3D models are not rendered. Descriptions are shown as text.
Q06Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed file size cap. Large archives or complex maps may exceed your device’s available memory.
Q07Can I edit or convert the file here?
This is a viewer. It does not edit KML or export another format. Use KML to GPX for that conversion.
