Why Use This Pie Chart Maker

01

Instant Live Chart

The pie chart redraws as you type. There is no upload step and no waiting. Paste category and value pairs from Excel, Google Sheets, or a CSV and the chart appears.

02

Percentages Done for You

Enter raw numbers such as counts, amounts, or votes. The tool adds them up and turns each one into its share of the total, shown on the chart, in the legend, and in the data table.

03

Pie or Donut

Switch between a classic pie chart and a donut chart in one click. The donut shows the total in the middle, which is handy for budgets and survey counts.

04

Readable by Default

Slices are separated by a thin gap, labels sit outside the pie in dark text, and the legend lists every category with its value and share. With more than eight categories the smallest ones are grouped as Other so the chart stays legible.

05

Export and Share

Download a 2× PNG for slides and homework, or an SVG you can edit in any vector tool. Copy the image to your clipboard, or share a link that rebuilds the same chart with your data and settings.

06

Free and Private

Everything runs in your browser and your data is never uploaded to a server. No signup, no limits, no paywall.

What Is a Pie Chart?

A pie chart shows how a whole is divided into parts. The circle stands for 100%, and each slice is a category whose angle is proportional to its share of the total. Pie charts work best when you have a handful of categories and the question is how much of the whole each one takes.

For a school assignment, a household budget, or one slide in a report, a pie chart is often the quickest way to show a breakdown. This free pie chart maker gives you the chart, the percentages, and the table in one place.

Pie Chart vs Bar Graph
A pie chart answers what share of the whole a category has. A bar graph answers which category is bigger and by how much. When slices are close in size, or there are more than about seven categories, a bar graph is easier to read.
Pie Chart vs Donut Chart
A donut chart is a pie chart with the centre removed. It carries the same information, and the hole leaves room for a total or a headline number. Pick whichever suits your layout.
Parts Must Add Up to a Whole
A pie chart only makes sense when the categories do not overlap and together cover the full total. Survey questions where people can pick several answers do not fit a pie chart, because the percentages add up to more than 100.
When to Use a Pie Chart
Use it for budgets, market share, survey results with one answer per person, and any breakdown with two to seven categories. For change over time use a line graph, and for ranking many items use a bar graph.

How to Make a Pie Chart Online

  1. 01

    Paste your data

Type or paste one category and value per line, like "Rent, 1200". Copying two columns from Excel or Google Sheets works. You enter raw numbers and the percentages are calculated for you.

  2. 02

    Choose pie or donut

Pick the classic pie chart or a donut chart with the total in the centre. The chart updates as you change the setting.

  3. 03

    Set labels and order

Show percentages, raw values, or no labels on the slices. Keep your own order or sort the slices from largest to smallest, and add a title.

  4. 04

    Download and share

Export the finished chart as PNG or SVG, copy it to the clipboard, or share a link. The summary and data table below the chart list every value and share.

Tips for Better Pie Charts

/ 01

Keep It to a Few Slices

Two to seven slices read well. Beyond that, group the small ones into Other or switch to a bar graph. This tool groups the tail for you once you pass eight categories.

/ 02

Sort From Largest to Smallest

Starting the largest slice at 12 o'clock and going clockwise in descending order makes the chart easier to scan. Keep your own order only when it carries meaning, such as a rating scale.

/ 03

Label the Slices Directly

Readers judge angles poorly. A percentage next to each slice removes the guesswork, and the legend covers slices too thin for a label.

/ 04

Check That It Adds Up to 100%

If the categories overlap or some are missing, the shares mislead. Make sure every item is counted once and the total is the real total.

/ 05

Avoid Comparing Two Pies

Comparing slices across two pie charts is hard. For this year against last year, a double bar graph shows the difference more clearly.

/ 06

Skip 3D and Exploded Effects

Tilting or exploding a pie distorts the angles and makes front slices look bigger. A flat pie or donut is the more accurate picture.

Pie Chart Concepts

Definition of a pie chart

A pie chart is a circular chart divided into slices. Each slice represents one category, and its central angle is proportional to that category's share of the total. The full circle is 360 degrees, which stands for 100%.

What a pie chart tells you

  • Share: what fraction of the whole each category takes.
  • Dominance: whether one category makes up most of the total.
  • Balance: whether the total is split evenly or unevenly.
  • Majority: whether a slice or a pair of slices passes 50%.

Limits worth knowing

People compare lengths more accurately than angles, so small differences between slices are hard to see. A pie chart also cannot show negative values or change over time. When either matters, use a bar graph or a line graph.

Useful Calculations

Total

Total = Σ values

1200 + 450 + 180 + 150 + 320 + 200 = 2500.

Share of the total

Share = (value ÷ total) × 100%

Rent 1200 of 2500 → 48%.

Slice angle

Angle = (value ÷ total) × 360°

Rent 48% → 172.8°.

Value from a percentage

Value = total × share ÷ 100

18% of 2500 → 450.

Pie Chart Maker FAQ

Q01How do I make a pie chart from my data?

Paste one category and value per line into the data box, separated by a comma, tab, or space (for example Rent, 1200). The pie chart draws at once with every percentage calculated. Choose pie or donut, pick the labels, add a title, then download PNG or SVG.

Q02Do I need to calculate the percentages myself?

No. Enter the raw numbers and the tool divides each one by the total. The share appears next to each slice, in the legend, and in the data table. If your numbers are already percentages that add up to 100, they work as they are.

Q03Can I make a donut chart?

Yes. Set Chart style to Donut chart. The slices stay the same and the total appears in the centre of the ring.

Q04How many slices can a pie chart have?

The chart draws up to eight slices. With more categories, the seven largest keep their own slice and the rest are combined into one Other slice. The data table still lists every category with its share.

Q05Can I paste data from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy two columns, category and value, and paste them into the data box. Tabs, commas, semicolons, and new lines are all accepted.

Q06How do I download or share the pie chart?

Click PNG for a raster image rendered at 2× for slides and documents, or SVG for a vector file you can edit in Figma, Illustrator, or Inkscape. Exported files carry a small kanaries.net credit in the corner, which the on-screen chart does not show. You can also copy the PNG to your clipboard, or click Share link to copy a URL that rebuilds your chart. The data travels in the link fragment and is never uploaded to a server.

Q07Is this pie chart maker free and is my data private?

Yes to both. The tool is free with no signup and no limits. It runs in your browser and your data is never uploaded to any server.

Q08When should I use a pie chart instead of a bar graph?

Use a pie chart when the point is each category's share of a whole and there are only a few categories. Use the Bar Graph Maker when you need to compare sizes precisely, when values are close together, or when there are many categories.
